![]() This book is the sequel to Beartown and it is quite possibly even more riveting. We follow many of the same characters, and a few new ones, in the rural hockey community, learning more of their triumphs and heartbreaks in a pulsing narrative. This book is sort of about a hockey team, but really it's about community and society and life and friendship and love. I loved this book. Ms. Deacon and I had a bit of a race to see who would get to read this one first, and I won. Backman's narrative in these novels is like a clinic in characterization: every passage is about a person before it is about an event. This technique really shapes the story for me as one of the human spirit and what it means to survive and thrive. Five out of five stars.
