![]() Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski is a book containing multiple short stories within the world of the Witcher. The stories follow Geralt, a man who kills monsters for money, known as witchers in the world of the book, and his adventures. In the book, Sapkowski dances around the question of what makes a monster through the eyes of Geralt, who had been specially trained and horrifically mutated himself. The book uses common fairy tales and puts a mature twist on them, building Geralt into a likable character and introducing more as he tries to find the true nature of himself and the sword of destiny that follows us all. I found this book through the Witcher video games, which are based on this series. I loved the games and the world and characters that are in it, so I thought I would enjoy the books too, which I did. I would give this book a 4.5/5 simply because one of the stories in it didn't seem to fit in with the rest and interrupted the flow between the stories that the others did so well. Even though The Sword of Destiny is translated from Polish, the language flows well and feels as though it wasn't translated at all. When the book is done, 6 of the 7 stories tie together extremely well and cover complex themes and all 7 of the stories build the compelling Witcher world up perfectly. -JG, grade 10
